Things you can do instead of blogging

January 31, 2008

1. Eat.

2. Sleep.

3. Work.

4. Play daddy.

5. Play “Super Mario World”.

6. Buy blinds for the living room and office.

7. Buy new living room furniture.

8. Be surprised when your wife trades in your truck for a new one.

9. Eagerly anticipate the return of LOST to the airwaves.

10. Think about blogging.

I just watched three episodes of The Office.

I’ve known since I was a junior in high school what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was one of the lucky few. I wanted to teach math, but not at a high school. I knew even then my personality would not fit with that student. I wanted to teach college. So I began college understanding I would need a graduate degree. The problem was my bachelor’s degree was a little too easy to get; I knew I would need some seasoning and maturing before attempting grad school. I wanted to do grad school well. So I took a few years off of school and matured some. When I was finally ready to give school another shot, I decided I needed to deny myself a few pleasures (like television shows) so I could focus on my school work.

So when I finished my work in December, I decided I needed to catch up on my pop culture and joined Netflix. I must say, I’ve really enjoyed it. You know The Sopranos won all those awards for good reason. (Maren and I are in the middle of the 3rd season. Don’t spoil me or I’ll have my students at San Jac steal your tires. Believe me, they know how.) I’ve been able to catch some movies I missed the first time around, or even some I wasn’t alive for. (“North by Northwest” is pretty good if you can appreciate an older movie.) But the one show I knew I would love but denied myself was The Office. So you can understand that it feels good to watch this show knowing its viewing was delayed for good reason.

Tonight, I watched the first three episodes of the second season of The Office, and epiphany hits me. I was still able, somehow, despite all my efforts outside of school, to underachieve during grad school.  Math homework is really boring.

Intelectual stimulation may be found elsewhere.

January 23, 2008

Hello all,

Here are the ground rules:

1. Profound posts will not be tolerated. Instead expect postings that let you know I just watched three episodes of The Office.

2. Proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation should always be used.

3. I will probably talk mainly about baseball, pop culture, San Jac, and occasionally theology.

Hope you guys are titillated.
